Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a gentle, non-invasive energy healing practice that supports balance in the body, mind, and spirit. It works by channeling universal life force energy—known by many names across cultures—through the hands of the practitioner to the client. Reiki can support relaxation, reduce stress, ease physical discomfort, and reconnect us to our own innate capacity for healing.
You don’t need to “believe” in Reiki for it to work. Reiki meets you exactly where you are.
Rooted in Tradition, Carried Forward with Care
While Reiki was systemised in early 20th century Japan by Mikao Usui, the practice of energy healing stretches far beyond one lineage. Across Indigenous, African, Asian, and diasporic cultures, the wisdom of working with touch, breath, spirit, and energy has existed for centuries—under names like prana, qi/chi, and ancestral healing.
Mikao Usui, a Japanese spiritual teacher, developed what we now call Usui Reiki Ryoho after a profound awakening on Mount Kurama, Japan. His system blended Buddhist and Shinto philosophies, originally as a path for personal spiritual growth. Over time, it evolved into a healing practice shared worldwide.
Today, many practitioners (like myself) carry Usui’s teachings forward—while also honouring the many energetic traditions that came before and alongside Reiki. This practice continues to grow and adapt to meet the cultural, emotional, and spiritual needs of those it serves.
Nope! Reiki can be done seated, lying down, or even remotely. Your comfort is key.
Absolutely. There are no contra-indications for reiki. Reiki is non-invasive, deeply gentle, and always adaptable.
Yes! Reiki works beautifully alongside traditional medical and therapeutic care.
What does the research say?
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it’s also been studied in clinical settings—and the results are promising:
Reduced anxiety and stress: Studies have shown Reiki can lower cortisol levels and help regulate heart rate variability.
Improved sleep and mood: Many report deeper sleep, emotional clarity, and reduced fatigue after sessions.
Pain relief & chronic condition support: Research suggests Reiki can reduce perception of pain, especially for those with chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, or post-surgical recovery.
Parasympathetic activation: Reiki encourages rest-and-digest (parasympathetic) dominance, helping regulate overstimulated nervous systems—especially important for neurodivergent folx and new parents.
